An Addition

For those of you who have kindly commented on my Bathing Beauties card, I have taken a couple more photographs to show you the layers, so that you can see how the card is built up.  I know that it's sometimes difficult to imagine just from a written description.  So here's what I did:

Here's a side(ish) view - you can see that the 'sand' layer is forward of the railings and the 'sea' layer is forward of the 'sand' layer.  Does that make sense?

The right-hand photo shows the layers from the top and now you can also see that the bathing beauties stand proud of the beach hut.

Finally, here's a view from the bottom - if you enlarge it, you will see that the beach hut roof is proud of the background paper too.  Hope that helps clarify the construction.

My Favourite Colours?

I stopped by the Raise The Bar challenge blog this week, because I feel I have been away from there for too long and it's time to play again.  This week's challenge is 'Colour Me Happy' - make a card using various hues of your favourite colour, with neutrals and a touch of complimentary colour if you have to!

Now when it comes to favourite colours, I have a really hard time.  Much of my choice depends on my current mood, the weather, what I've been reading/watching/doing ... you name it, but my favourite colour changes all the time.  I do have a certain palette that I gravitate towards usually, always the duskier, dirtier, off variations of most colours, it has to be said.  For example, I'm not a great lover of blue, BUT I love teal, duck egg blue, deep aqua - you get the picture. 

I seem to have done a lot with teal and aqua lately though so I decided I had to use one of my other favourites - green.  Now I like green but ... (told you there would be a twist) not grass green or pea green - no, I love olive green and sage green and lime green.  Oh hum!  So after a bit of thought and a lot of playing around, here's my entry for this week's RTB challenge:

Papers: October Afternoon, my current favourites.

I love this image - it brings to mind all those childhood holidays, looking in rock pools and splashing around at the edge of the sea.  She is such a little sweetie, and free too, which is always a bonus. 

Having said I would be using green, of course, I now realise that this is mostly brown, with green (and a touch of red) thrown in, so I'm not sure just how on the mark it is for the challenge, really.  But I love this combination of colours and these scrumptious October Afternoon papers just make me warm inside (beware, paperstroker attack!).

I coloured her up with my Copics (I guess I should really start to make a list of what I use, now that I'm getting better at using them!)  and added just a touch of 'sand' to go with the water.  I didn't put in any 'glow' with my Prismas this time - I just wanted her to stand out against the bright white.  She was matted on to brown, which was layered on to green, just for a little more co-ordination.  The layer behind the image is raised from the page slightly to make allowance for the horizontal band of paper and ribbon.  Then the image is stuck down with 3D tape also, to give a little more depth.

I love this card, no matter how immodest that may seem.  Making something with my favourite colours (and favourite pens, and favourite papers - you get the idea) makes me very happy and I'm really pleased that I decided to add that pop of red at the last minute because it brings it all together. 

So, I'm off to link up now and take a well-earned break because what with new DTs and Dream Teams and general stuff, I'm pooped!

Bonus Post

Having gone to all the trouble of making a card to enter into the two challenges I missed, I thought it only right that I should still post it, even if my brain did go on holiday when the deadline was due!

This was intended for last week's Little Red Wagon challenge, which was 'Ruffles', and I used last week's Papertake sketch for inspiration.

I've wanted to colour this image of Mo's for a little while now but was worried about all the movement in her dress - I didn't think I could do it justice.  But I have to say I'm rather pleased with how it turned out! 

The brightly coloured balloons are picked up beautifully by the bright colours in the backing paper - nicely complimented, I think. 

Now, I'm not really a ruffley type of girl so I didn't want to use anything too 'poofy' on my card.  I decided that a paper ruffle would be just the ticket, so I took a piece of paper, folded it zig-zag fashion and chalked all edges, including the folded ones, just to give a bit of dimension.  I glued a piece of ribbon down the middle for added oomph.  Once it was on the card, I pulled up the edges of the ruffles so that they stood proud of the card and looked like ruffles! A final flower and a couple of leaf sprays and she was done.  Shame I missed the deadline, eh!?

I shall now try to get to bed before midnight and, more important, fill the hours before dawn with sleep!  Yawn! Soooooo tired.

Could The Person Who Stole My Brain Please Return It!

Well, I'm having a really good start to the week.  Managed to miss two deadlines yesterday because I wasn't concentrating and now I've been convinced all day that it's been Wednesday.  I need my brain back!  Mind you, the reason is probably lack of sleep as I've not had much shut-eye over the past few days. 

Anyway, tonight's post is for this week's Cupcake Craft Challenge, which is 'Don't be square' -  no square cards allowed!  Oooooerrrr! That's a tricky one for me!

As it happens, this card came about purely by accident (see below) and became my entry:

This card went through quite a few incarnations before ending up as it is now.  Originally, it wasn't for this challenge: it was, in fact, a square card to begin with - same design but square.  Then I decided I didn't like all the 'spare' area around the top of the beach hut, so I trimmed off the corners to give the card a 'gable' shape. That didn't work either, so I eventually ended up cutting the top to follow the contours of the beach hut and, voila (can't find the accented 'a' on my keyboard), it just worked.  So I abandoned my original challenge and decided that this was now definitely not a square card and, therefore, was appropriate for the Cupcake challenge.  Ha!

There is method in my design: the card is actually heavily 3-dimensional but I forgot to take pictures from the side to show you this, and now the light has gone.  The different papers are supposed to be representative of the sea, sand, and flowery promenade, with dark blue (not black, which is how it looks) railings.  The beach hut has a separate fascia and a real door cut into the front, just for a little dimension. 

This fun image from Isabella's Sketchbook was perfect for what I originally set out to do but, actually, ended up being even more perfect for the final version.  I love the simple vintage feel of the image and it was just so easy to colour. 

So by happy accident, I now have a card to enter early in a current challenge - yaaaaay!

Dreamy News Everyone!

Well, I think I deserve a place in the 'Guiness Book of Records' this week, for holding my breath the longest time humanly possible - two whole weeks!  Yup, that's right, I've been busting to tell you all but I've had to keep a secret and, finally, I can let you all know ....

I'M OFFICIALLY A FULL-TIME MEMBER OF MO'S DREAM TEAM!!!!!

Did you hear that?  I'M A 'DREAM GIRL'!!!

The look of sheer bliss on this lovely face is just how I'm feeling now - like the sun is shining on me and I'm all warm and gooey inside! It's a delightful image.

I wondered how I was going to incorporate three designer papers into my card this week.  I didn't really want to use blocks of colour, i.e. rectangles or squares, but I was having a bit of difficulty working out what I did want to do.  Then I had a sandwich on a side plate and thought 'that's it! I'll use curves!'.  (Don't things occur to us crafters at the weirdest times?)

I chose the three papers, popping some lovely orange in there for contrast and to pick up the orange in the flower centres on the background paper and in the flowers I had coloured around the image.  This was really one of those cards that made itself, once I had decided what I wanted to do with it - it just all fell easily into place. 

My largest circle die didn't quite fit the image and I didn't want to cut 'out of the box' on this one, so I ended up cutting a scalloped circle instead. Only problem with that is that it made it difficult to mat the image so I cut another scalloped circle out of dark orange and popped this underneath, turning it slightly so that the orange scallops showed between the white ones.  At least I managed to get some colour behind the image this way.

A little ribbon, a couple of buttons and there she was - all bright and beautiful.

So, she's no longer my final GDT card, only the first of many I shall look forward to creating for the Dream Team.  I can't thank Mo and the girls enough for this amazing opportunity!

Another Last Minute Sunday!

What a week it has been!  Very full, a little stressful and not very productive, I'm afraid!  That's why, once again, I'm all last minute with my challenges.  Life has been in the way this week, mostly because we've had a frantic time at work and I've been bushed by the time I've arrived home!  Hopefully, next week should be calmer and I'm looking forward to getting a few more projects done.

So this week's Last Minute Sunday is for the Papertake Weekly Challenge, which is a lovely sketch this week and the Cupcake Craft Challenge -  'Red and White', a lovely challenge combination, I think.  Here's my entry:

I love poppies, always have, and this delightful free image from Bird's Cards is gorgeous.  I coloured it with my Copics and added a yellow outline, just to add some warmth and make the flowers pop a little.

I've been really lucky to acquire some more October Afternoon papers recently, as a 'well done' present (more of that in a couple of days), and I like the combination of the papers here, taken from the 'Cherry Hill' and 'Report Card' collections. I am now officially in love with October Afternoon's scrumptious, gorgeous and downright wonderful papers!

In fact, truth be told, I'm really happy with this card.  It'll make a wonderful 'just because' card.  That bright poppy red is enough to cheer up even the bluest friend!

I've been crafting hard this past 24 hours to try and get a little ahead of myself for the coming week, so I'll be back soon.  Have a good week ahead and ...

Coffee at The Shabby Tea Room?

It's a strange coupling of challenges this evening.  I was lucky enough to win Isabella's Challenge last week so I invested my gift certificate in a couple of lovely new images, one of which I decided to use for this week's challenge. 

The Shabby Tea Room's sketch challenge was interesting this week too, so I decided to combine the two, making it coffee time at the Shabby Tea Rooms, I guess!

I love the retro/vintage feel to this digistamp - and the quirky but true sentiment.  Isabella's Challenge was actually 'favourite food' this week, but there is mention of chocolate here, so I think I'm safe! 

I took inspiration from Isabella's rendering of this image on her blog and coloured up the image with my Copics.  I then used a light coloured Prisma pencil to add the 'steam' over the top.

I chose to use a piece of my new October Afternoon papers to mat the image - it is such a cute paper, very retro - and then set this off against a much more geometric background paper from DCWV.  I layered ribbon to give two-tone stripe to echo the bow at the top of the image, then made some little red flowers to pick up the motif on the centre paper.  I'm not 100% sure what little red flowers have to do with coffee and chocolate, other than the fact that I happen to like them also!

Guess How Old He Is

Just as I begin this, I've remembered that I've already posted once today.  Ah well, old age and all that!  But I'll post anyway because knowing my luck, I'll forget and miss the deadline! 

It's not often a new set of man stuff arrives on the digi scene so it was 'hurrah' all round when the wonderful Mo Manning introduced 'Big Guy'.  Finally, man stuff that doesn't have anything to do with beer!

 

I try not to miss the DP2 Challenge every week (as you may have noticed), because it's the one time of the week I am guaranteed Mo time (although it's wonderful being the GDT for the Dream Team this month as I get an excuse to Mo out!).  This week's challenge was a sketch: 

Quite a lot of elements to this one and I wondered how I'd handle it but I have to admit that my paper choice made it quite easy.  Here's what I came up with:

As we know, golf = patterned sweaters and this wonderful paper from Cosmo Cricket features the brilliant 'Argyle' pattern so loved of golf sweater manufacturers, it seems.  With it's repeating motif and co-ordinating stripes, It was an easy choice for this card. 

Here's just the front of the easel so that you can see better how it works with the sketch layout.  I love the wide bands of pattern, which I wasn't sure I would when I first saw the sketch.  I had to add the buttons for a bit of (masculine) embellishment! 

I coloured this chap with my Copics and paper-pieced his ballooning plus-fours.  Unfortunately, you can't see his shoes properly in the photograph (what a surprise!) but they are brown leather with Sakura glaze over them to give a bit of shine.  The light from the window has bounced off them a bit, making them look a little strange, to say the least.

I sat for a while, stumped for a sentiment, as, to be honest, I didn't really have anyone in mind for this particular card.  I don't know about you, but if I'm stuck I usually start writing down all the things I associate either with the intended recipient or the image and, on this occasion, it was exactly the right thing to do because I suddenly came up with this one:

For this to work properly, I needed both 'inside' and 'outside' to be visible at the same time. Can you guess how old he is? You got it, he's 'fore''tee' - ha-ha!

So, that's Big Guy and I'm sure that I can find a happy home for him somehow.  In fact, all reasonable offers considered!

Off to cook (a late) dinner now and then an early night, methinks.  I'm not sleeping so well since my fall as I appear to have developed some sciatica, which is particularly present when lying down!  Bum (so to speak!)!

Showing Some 'Purse-onality'

If you read my recent blog post, you'll know that I spent much of the beautiful weekend catching up on laundry, which I hadn't been able to do because of the fowl weather we've had for much of this year so far.  What I noticed as I was hanging the washing on the line was that I seem to have rather a lot of clothes in various shades of teal!  (Even my wedding dress was teal!)  Therefore, it should come as no surprise that some of my favourite papers at the moment at DCWV 'Linen Closet' (so aptly named), with their beautful combination of teal and brown. 

When I saw Project Tuesday's challenge this week, my hand immediately went to my DCWV paper pad.  The challenge was to produce a card purse, with matching cards, and this is what my 'Linen Closet' revealed:

This week's challenge host, Rose Miller, set us the challenge, using this tutorial from Splitcoaststampers.  Now, the dimensions were different than those I needed for my project, but I just took the basic instructions and used my own dimensions, which is very easy to do. 

I don't know about you, but there are always sheets in a paper pad that I don't use - usually because they don't fit with my card projects very well.  So these are the ones I concentrate on using when I'm making projects like this.  It enables you to use only small amounts of your favourites, whilst keeping the wonderful co-ordination that a paper pad gives. 

I printed a small 'Thank You' sentiment on some 3 x 3 inch square cards (took a little working out because I had to work upside down to get the sentiment in the right place!) and then just decorated with a few scraps, some ribbon and a single layer flower with a button centre.  How simple and sweet.  I made three cards in shades of green/aqua and three in shades of blue, all from scraps from the same pad.

The box was very simple to decorate - in fact, I cheated a bit and only embellished the front, although I did put a patterned panel on the back and each side to complete the overall look.  Then I attached a co-ordinating strip, just like the ones on the cards, to the front of the purse and wrapped some ribbon around the whole box, finishing off with nice bow.  Another few co-ordinating scraps made a flower (I chalked the edges for definiton) and I hung a little flower charm below, just for a bit of bling!

I set two eyelets in the back and in the front and threaded some ribbon through, for the handles.  Finished!

This was a really simple, really enjoyable little project and it has given me a really nice idea for some inexpensive Chrimble pressies, so thank you Project Tuesday for the inspiration.

Take It Away, Number 2!

And on to number two, which is my entry for this week's Papertake Weekly Challenge (only just in time, I think).  The theme this week is 'Cutie pie', which translates into anything you consider to be cute.

Now I usually end up with cute by accident - it's rarely my initial intention.  But this week ... well, I think it's cute!

Isn't she darling?  I coloured simply with my Copics as I didn't want any colouring to overpower this delicate little image.  I wanted bright and sunny and these papers by October Afternoon certainly delivered!  I punched and made up a couple of matching flowers and there she is - simple, bright and cute as a button.

My darling OH has just treated me to some more October Afternoon papers (aaahhhh!) so I'm eagerly awaiting their arrival.  Like Cosmo Cricket, October Afternoon are a firm favourite, they make me feel happy (oh-oh - paperstroker alert!). 

So that's it for today - finally.  It's taken a while to get back on top this week after my fall on Wednesday.  I'm on the mend now and, hopefully, will get plenty of crafting done this week.  And I have the excitement of waiting for my new papers to keep me going.  Woooooooo!

Well, it's my turn to cook Sunday dinner so I'm off to roast a chicken!

Double-Post Sunday!

Yup, as usual, I find myself having to post twice today to avoid missing tomorrow's deadline for two of my challenges this week.  Oh hum! One day I'll get ahead of myself properly.  Mind you, it's been such a lovely weekend here that I've had to do some housewifey things, like laundry, whilst the weather was good, so that has eaten a little into my weekend crafting.  I'm not complaining, mind you - the laundry basket is now empty of clothes for the first time in months and I feel very virtuous.

So, the first pair of challenges are:

Cupcake Craft Challenge: Childhood memories
Isabella's Challenge: Sketch (which I have rotated 90 degrees clockwise)

 When I was a little girl, I used to go and stay with my grandma for a couple of weeks in the long summer holidays, which was a great treat.  We would often walk up the village to visit my great-grandma, who was a wonderful old lady - I could sit and listen to her stories about her own life forever.  I miss them both much.

Great-grandma lived in a small bungalow, with nothing but the tiniest patch of garden at the front (although there was plenty of room to play in the back garden).  One of my best memories is of being able to tend this tiny front patch, which meant removing the seed pods from the pansies once they had flowered, taking out what very few weeds there might be, and being given a large pair of (mostly blunt) scissors with which I was entrusted to clip the tiny section of privet hedge that grew there.  Then I would water the garden and feel very proud of myself for being such a good gardner!  (That didn't last by the way - I could kill silk flowers now!)

So, my entry for these two challenges looks like this:

Isabella's Challenge requires the use of an Isabella digistamp from her store, 'Isabella's Sketchbook'. When I came across this little image, I knew it would be perfect for these challenges. 

I wanted the whole thing to have a muted, retro vibe, so I coloured simply to give a 1930s feel to the image and chose this gorgeous grey polkadot paper as my only DP for this project.  The addition of red matting and the ladybug just picks up enough colour to bring the whole thing together (I hope).

Mo's Digital Pencil - Project of the Month Blog Hop!

Woooooo, my very first blog hop and I'm delighted and honoured that it is as a member of Mo's Dream Team!  If you've arrived here from Rosette's blog, then you're on the right track.  If not, why not hop over to Cheryl's and start from the beginning.

This month's theme is buttons, which I love and adore but don't always have the occasion to use.  So I went a bit overboard and got all buttoned out!

I used Mo's wonderful Mummu and Virginia for this project, which you can purchase from Mo's Digital Pencil store, here. I love Mummu, in all her guises, but this particular image evokes very lovely memories for me.  You'll find more details about this project below so I hope you'll come back and take a look.

So, ready for the details?

I wanted to make something other than a card for the hop and this image is almost photograph-like, catching a quiet moment between the two of them.  So I thought I'd turn it into a picture. It's a real shame that my photography skills are so lacking - in real life, this is beautifully three-dimensional.

This is the closest I've ever come to decoupage - the top image is separate from the bottom and is raised slightly by the heavy paper-piecing on the sofa.

This is what the bottom layer looked like when I started:

You will see that I've paper-pieced the sofa in green velour paper from SEI, each separate piece of the sofa being a separately cut piece of paper, to give that real 'joined together' look, instead of just a flat piece of paper.  I added some shading by chalking the edges with dark moss green and using my Copics to suggest the pleating around the bottom. I coloured around the edges of Mummu and Virginia with a dark tone of the final colour, to give some depth behind the top layer.

I'm sure Mummu would have a rug to put her feet on, so this one was paper-pieced again, with an embossed DCWV 'Linen Closet' paper, and shadowed around the edges with chalk.

Then I coloured and cut out the top layer:

As you can see, I've completed the colouring and then cut so close around the image that there is no free white paper to deal with at all.  Here, Mummu and Virginia are 'free-standing' against a white background so I could photograph them.

As Mummu is knitting, I thought I'd join her.  How funny was that?!  I can't knit to save my life and with my clumsy fingers it was hilarious to all watching.  But I managed to knit enough for this project and now my needles will reside at the back of the craft cupboard for ever more. 

I covered the frame with the knitted length, scoring the frame first to ensure a good key for the PVA glue I used. 

Next, buttons, which were sewn on through the top layer of the knitting, and to finish, some pearl-headed hat pins.

All I had to do then was carefully mount the top image on the bottom one.  I didn't need to use dimensional pads as the heavy paper-piecing on the sofa acted as a spacer between the background paper and the top image.  I used just a few small glue dots to hold Mummu and Virginia in place.

When I was a girl, I used to love rummaging through my grandma's box of buttons - it was like treasure.  That's why this project is so dear to me - it reminds me of my grandma, who would sit by the (gas) fire, knitting.  She's no longer here and I miss our time together.
